The point of this post is to talk about my favorite diabetes dessert that I have discovered over the years. I have been a diabetic for years and have gone through the trials and tribulations of dealing with diabetes and better yet, finding foods that taste great.
My doctor and dietitian have taught me, through numerous visits, that the best way to control my diabetes was to eat low sugar and low carbohydrate meals. Well, the foods that came to my mind were all really bland tasting and boring. How was I supposed to fit desserts into my diabetic diet? The truth of the matter was that for a long time I simply did not have them.
After some time, after getting my diabetes under control, my dietitian and doctor advised me that it was possible to experiment with different desserts for my diabetes in order to sweeten up my life. The recipes that I discovered were not usual desserts that most of you would know, but they still taste good. One of my favorite desserts for my diabetes is a baked apple with cool whip recipe. Its not much of a recipe.....but its something. My doctor informed me that if I was going to have apples then I should consume granny smith because they had a lower sugar content. I do not know this for certain because there aren't any nutritional facts stuck on an apple, but it does make since when I think about it. Granny smith apples taste more sour than they do sweet like other apples. This worked out for me because fortunately granny smith apples are one of my favourites.
So all there is to my diabetic dessert recipe is to warm or "bake" the apples, I usually just put them into the microwave, but I am lazy. Then all I do is add some cool whip on top of them. Simple right? Well I told you it would be. This diabetes dessert may sound quite boring and bland, but to me it is quite delicious and grand. It really brightens up my diet and my day.
Diabetes Dessert Recipes
If you are reading this, then you are probably looking for some diabetes dessert recipes. So in order to complete this quest for diabetic desserts, I would like to show you the process that I use.
When looking for free diabetic recipes, the simplest thing to do is to know how to make them yourself. After visiting my doctor, I learned that for my specific case of diabetes, I was supposed to eat foods that were low in sugar and low in carbohydrates. So how do you make a dessert that is low in sugar and carbs? The answer came very easily to me, but for others it can be much harder. When looking for something to brighten up my diabetic menu of foods that I eat, I introduced some flavor to my diet by using splenda and other sweeteners that do not have sugar in them.
So when I make a dessert, I simply replace the sugar with splenda. This makes the food lower in sugar ad ok for me to eat in moderation. My doctor advised me to always eat any meal in moderation. I was told that smaller meals would kelp me to manage my diabetes.
I am now able to sweeten up my diabetic dessert recipes by adding splenda. Now it is also important to understand that by adding splenda to an apple pie does not necessarily mean that it is completely sugar free. The crust and sugar free pie filler may have some sugar in them. There are also other products out on the market today that can brighten up your diet, but are not free diabetic dessert recipes. These products that I am talking about are ice cream, chocolate, and other things sweetened with splenda. Just remember to always check with your doctor so you know which desserts are ok for your diabetes.
